Those of us who remember the Microsoft of ten or fifteen years ago recall the interminable long development cycles for certain products. Sometimes, it seemed that half a decade would pass before a new version of big product would ship. Project velocity at Microsoft these days is another story however. Microsoft is cranking out products and updates faster than many of us can keep track of. If the old model was a train it would look like this clip_image002.

The local milk train looks impressive, generates a lot of smoke and noise, but makes slow progress to the destination.

Continuing this train metaphor, weak though it is, I’d say that Silverlight development more like a bullet train - quiet and fast.

Release Candidate now Available

This week Microsoft releases Silverlight 4 RC, the latest version of their flagship RIA platform. I have to say, it’s an impressive release; they have come a long ways from the lightweight first release a few years ago.

The Silverlight 4 Beta appeared in Fall 2009 and contains plenty of new features.  I wrote about this back in November.

The Silverlight development team has been a busy bunch since the Beta release though and they’ve added a huge list of improvement and new features.

You can download the RC now.  http://silverlight.net
